Oscars 2019 Weekend
By the time you are reading this post, Oscar Award winners for 2019, would have been announced. I hope, Black Panther, steals the show. It was my favourite and I have watched it three times.
Before we start arguing about which deserved better and what bias of the Oscar committee needs to work on, I wanted to view the essential movies this weekend. I am lucky to live in a city, Chennai, which has the world's best movie viewing experience (I know its a tall claim but more about that in a separate post).
I am not a Queen fan. I don't even know much of their songs other than their famous, "We will rock you". I have read about Freddie Mercury because of his Indian origin, and that's it. But I enjoyed the movie. It was a crash course into the history of Queen and Freddie. I envy the films that can portray their protagonists in all shades, instead of being hagiographic or overly critical. It was nice to see Rami Malek's excellent acting of the effeminate Freddie. I thoroughly enjoyed the climactic Live Aid concert. I had goosebumps. Rooting for Rami Malek for the best actor award 👊.
This movie had a lot of critical praise and many snubs. Because of the views being polarised, I was curious to watch it. I loved the movie. Mahershala Ali's performance was fantastic. I have been a fan of him since House of Cards and Luke Cage. It was a complex character and the way he bonds with Viggo's character was nice. Yes, it may be a template story, but I had a good laugh, sympathised with both the characters and in general I enjoyed it. I root for Mahershala wins the award for best-supporting actor 🏆.
Roma has been making waves because of the star director, Alfonso Cuaron, and Netflix. It takes its own sweet time to get set into the movie. But it grows on you. I felt it was like a vintage Balu Mahendra movie. It is a detailed character study, but I was able to connect with Cleo, Sofia. It is very poignant, and it is amazingly made. I am torn between Roma and Black Panther. I want Black Panther to win, but I guess Roma will.
