Theme for 2019
I am agnostic about resolutions in the New Year. I find them very rigid and suspect its a fad. People join the bandwagon and lose steam of it by February or March. But I do believe in learning new skills and constant improvement of oneself.
I am a huge fan of Cortex podcast hosted by Myke Hurley and CGP Grey. Myke planted this idea of having a theme for a year or for weeks, instead of the rigid and faddish, resolution.
Some of the themes are "year of adulting" or "year of order". Based on this theme, Myke organizes his tasks and other activities loosely tied toward the theme. Like getting married or expanding business or declutter. Its sort of liberating as well as less pressure compared to a goal or resolution.
My theme for 2019 is "year of creation over consumption". In a way, this 200wordsaday challenge is a way to prime myself into this theme. I understand, I will not stop my consumption of media. Be it Kindle, Netflix, blogs, podcasts or YouTube.
I don't believe in media diet. I belong to the single person cult where we proclaim:
To generate better ideas, you need to consume a lot of ideas. Over a time, we cultivate a taste and become better in consuming the ideas.
I don't want to have a lofty goal of writing a book or publish one well crafted blog post a week (even though I want to do it at one point in my life). So in the next year I want to kickstart the creation process and it could be 200-words a day, a sketch note, a movie review, a detailed book review or a journal entry. I am an infovore and I love movies and TV. So I am not going to curb anything there. I am just going to "create" things (review / blog / tweet storm / sketchnote / highlights) based on my consumption in 2019.
Wish me luck :-)
